Happy New Year! I can’t believe it’s 2025 already. A new year brings new and exciting possibilities, especially when it comes to crushing those health and fitness goals.
As a registered dietitian and certified health and wellness coach, I am here to help! For most people, New Year’s resolutions fail miserably–I want you to be the exception. Let’s talk about goal setting and how you can achieve lasting results this year
The type of goal matters. An exploratory study investigating the effectiveness of goal-type on achieving New Year's resolutions found that individuals who made both superordinate and subordinate goals had greater goal pursuit than those who made only superordinate or subordinate goals.
In other words, combining your WHY (superordinate) with your HOW (subordinate) produces goal-pursuing behavior.
Superordinate goal – your why
These goals tend to be broader and more abstract
For some, they become a life-long process of self-improvement
Superordinate goals challenge you to consider your motivation and what is most important to you
As an example, why does someone want to lose weight? To feel more attractive? To gain their confidence back? To have the energy to play with their kids? To be able to care and provide for their family?
Subordinate goal – your how
These goals are concrete, have direction, require specific action steps, and can be monitored for progress
How will you achieve your goal? What kind of work is required?
For instance, if your main goal is weight loss, you may make an additional goal of exercising three times per week.
Setting both superordinate and subordinate goals can help you achieve those New Year’s resolutions.
Setting smaller, realistic goals that produce measurable changes keeps you on track and motivated. At the same time, having a clear understanding of the bigger picture (your why) helps you sustain lifestyle and behavioral changes when the going gets tough and the motivation is long gone.
The moral of the story: start small but dream big!
It is also important to establish self-efficacy
People who believe that they are capable of completing the required steps to achieve a goal are more successful than those who lack confidence to do so.
The saying, ‘she believed she could so she did’ just might have a bit of truth to it!
